No, the Finns are not far and away the most depressed creatures on the planet, even if the early version of our Monday story about suicides might have led some readers to believe it.
We were undone by the decimal-point glitch. The article carried the alarming news that "Nearly 44% of Finns took medication for depression last year, up from just over 8% in 1991 and 16% in 1994". Fortunately, things have not reached this parlous state, and the error has now been corrected.
We apologise to any who may have cancelled a move to Finland on the grounds that it is altogether too dangerous for one's mental health, and we express thanks to a sharp-eyed and perceptive reader in Switzerland who simply couldn't and wouldn't believe it. At least someone has faith in us.
