Finnish insurance companies and police report increasing numbers of car thefts in which the thief has first stolen the keys before taking the vehicle.
A more sophisticated way to steal a car key is to get it from the showroom of a car dealership. This ploy involves taking the second of the two keys hanging from the ignition of the car being sold. The licence plate number is then written down; when the car is sold, the thief finds out the address of the new owner from the records of the Finnish Vehicle Administration.
