Anatomy of a Boring Photograph
Sep. 9th, 2005 03:21 pmPetteri Sulonen: "Photography straddles the divide between art and utility. Most photographs are strictly utilitarian -- whoever produced the image had some pretty specific purpose in mind when shooting it, whether it was to preserve a memory, to document a news story, or to sell toothpaste. These kinds of photographs are rarely really boring. They can't afford to be, or they wouldn't serve their purpose. Boring photography thrives in the realm of so-called "fine art" photography -- that is, photography whose primary reason for being is existence as an object in itself."
