"Leadership is management under stress. When the going is easy and the answers obvious leaders are so numerous that they are on special offer and often it is a case of buy one get one free. When difficulties arise, leaders are scarce. It is surprising how many people stand around waiting to be told what to do."

"Every skipper, short-handed or not must look after the crew. Crew management means ensuring everyone on board has a safe, comfortable and enjoyable voyage. It is a cross between man management and mothering.

Leadership is management under stress. When the going is easy and the answers obvious leaders are so numerous that they are on special offer and often it is a case of buy one get one free. When difficulties arise, leaders are scarce. It is surprising how many people stand around waiting to be told what to do.

A leader is, or appears to be, in control of the uncertain and unknown situations. He makes decisions without referring to others. This is not the same as ignoring the crew and issuing commands. Nor does it mean that the skipper lets the crew take a vote and does what the majority want. It means the skipper hears what the crew have to say, then makes his decision. He then works out how to implement it, explains his plan to the crew, rehearses if necessary, and then he and the crew put the plan into action. Giving orders is replaced by sharing out tasks.

A good skipper and crew motivate each other in th same way that they feed off each other to control their fears. The skipper encourages the crew to perform well and a good performance by the crew gives confidence to the skipper.

Skippers must reassure their crews in order to develop their self-confidence, self-reliance, and encourage the belief that they are controlling events rather than vice versa. They should promote social interaction between crew members in order to build up teamwork so that each crew member can rely upon support from others. Everyone should be fully in the picture all of the time so that they understand where their tasks fit into the wider scheme of things."
