Nils Gustafsson charged with three murders in 1960 Bodom killings

Espoo resident Nils Gustafsson is to be charged with three murders in the infamous case of the Lake Bodom murders 45 years ago. Prosecutors announced the decision to pursue the case against Gustafsson on Wednesday morning.

Gustafsson was the only survivor of a group of four teenagers, three of whom were stabbed to death during a camping trip at Lake Bodom near Helsinki in the summer of 1960.

He was remanded in custody in April last year after investigators said that evidence suggested that he was behind the killings. He was released to wait for the prosecutors' decision in late May 2004.

Nils Gustafsson has consistently denied involvement in the killings, saying that the three victims were killed by an unknown assailant.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) did not complete its investigation of the evidence until late March this year, because forensic tests conducted in foreign crime laboratories took longer than expected.

Details of the indictment and of the evidence will come out in the first court hearing.
